Your Resume Needs to Advertise These Skills

One of the major hiring trends of the year is that employers are not just searching for people with hard skills. Sure they want to hear about your technical expertise or hard skills such as: creating a spreadsheet, programming, engineering, etc. Your resume must also demonstrate that you use soft skills to get the job done too. Soft skills are the personal attributes you need to succeed in the workplace. Regardless of the job you're applying for, you need at least some soft skills to move ahead and advance your career.

Hard skills often get more attention when you are developing your resume or hearing job search advice as they are easier to define. Some examples are: data analysis, project management, programming, system design. 

At the most recent International HR Conference I attended and spoke at, Recruiters spent more time mentioning the need to hear about soft skills too on the resume and in the interview.

Soft skills are much more difficult to define and measure – they are the “people” skills that help you to successfully interact with others in the workplace. Regardless of the job, demonstrating you can work effectively with others is of vital importance.

Employers seek candidates with hard and soft skills when hiring for most positions. A negative attitude or giving off the vibe that you aren’t a team player is a red flag. Companies also want to see evidence of your ability to solve problems and think creatively and resourcefully. They are interested in whether you have good communication skills.

Let Employers Know you have these skills
Soft Skills vary by Job. For example, if you are seeking a manager position, you must emphasizes your ability to lead and get things done through others.

Don't just say that you have the skills the company needs – prove it to them. Include the results you’ve achieved on the job by demonstrating your hard and soft skills. They are the best way to advertise yourself and be appealing to an employer in today’s marketplace.
